Dear Friends, we wanted to pass on a reminder about this important presentation. Peace, Mike and Carmen
One Michigan, a youth led, grassroots organizing group, would like to invite you to our first ever movie screening of “Papers” to be held on August 25th at 6pm at the COMPAS Center 8701 W. Vernor, Detroit Mi 48209.
Papers is a documentary portraying the real lives of undocumented youth forced to put their lives, education, and DREAMs on hold because they lack legal status. These students live everyday wondering what the future holds, they are being punished over a decision their parents took for them years ago. They live without the promise of a better life, without the chance of ever receiving the college education they have worked for their whole lives, and with an empty vision of the American dream.
But for the first time students, just like members of One Michigan, are standing up and saying enough is enough. “We are tired of living in fear, tired of being left out, tired of having to put our lives on hold”.
Papers is a real life documentary of the risky decision to step out of the shadows and speak up for what is right. The documentary reveals the real courage it takes for these young adults to declare their illegal status even though this means risking deportation.
After the screening One Michigan members will share their stories and struggles and show the community how fear no longer holds them down
One Michigan is a group of immigrant youth and their allies dedicated on passing the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act would help undocumented students who have been in the U.S. for more than five years, graduate from high school and attend college for at least two years get legal status and eventually citizenship.
